Still Skipping Sunscreen? Here's everything you should know
But here's what changed my mind: understanding what UV radiation is actually doing to your skin every single day, with or without sunscreen. Once you know, you can't unknow it.
I've tried enough sunscreens to have opinions. These are the ones that are genuinely wearable, lightweight, no cast, no grease, and worth adding to your routine.
Why sunscreen is the most important step in your routine
Every other skincare product you use, your vitamin C, your niacinamide, your carefully chosen moisturiser, is working to repair, brighten, and protect your skin. UV radiation quietly undoes all of it.
UV exposure is the number one cause of premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and skin damage. In India, where the UV index regularly hits 8–11 (classified as "very high" to "extreme"), unprotected skin is taking damage every single day, whether you feel it or not.
A few things worth knowing:
UVA rays, the ones responsible for ageing and pigmentation, penetrate glass. Sitting near a window, driving, working in a glass-fronted building, you are getting UV exposure indoors. Cloudy days are not a reprieve either. Up to 80% of UV rays pass through clouds.
Acne scars and post-inflammatory marks also take significantly longer to fade with daily unprotected sun exposure. If you're using any kind of active ingredient to treat pigmentation or uneven skin tone, SPF is what makes it work.
The short version: SPF every day, rain or shine, indoors or out.
What to look for on the label
Broad spectrum protects against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning). If it doesn't say broad spectrum, put it back.
SPF 50 or above, in Indian UV conditions, SPF 30 is not sufficient for daily outdoor use.
PA++++ rating, this is the UVA protection rating used in Asia. ++++ is the highest available and what you want for pigmentation and ageing protection.
Texture that works for you, gel and fluid formulas absorb fastest and feel lightest. Creams and lotions tend to feel heavier. If you've tried sunscreen and hated how it felt, it was probably the wrong texture for your skin, not sunscreen in general.
Chemical or hybrid filter, chemical sunscreens (using filters like Uvinul A+, Tinosorb S) sit lighter on skin than pure mineral ones (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) which are more likely to leave a white cast.
The best sunscreens in India right now
Minimalist SPF 50 PA++++ Sunscreen,
The one I use daily. Gel-cream texture that absorbs within seconds, leaves a subtle matte finish, and has zero white cast on Indian skin tones. It uses a combination of chemical filters, Uvinul A+ and Tinosorb S, which means it sits completely flat without heaviness.
The PA++++ rating gives maximum UVA protection, which is what you care about for pigmentation and long-term skin health. At ₹399 it's genuinely one of the best value sunscreens available in India.
Apply it 15 minutes before going outside for full activation.

Re'equil Oxybenzone Free SPF 50 PA+++
Re'equil is one of the most consistently dermatologist-recommended sunscreens in India. Oxybenzone-free and fragrance-free, with a fluid texture that disappears into skin instantly. It's particularly well suited to sensitive or reactive skin that doesn't tolerate heavier formulations.
If you've struggled with sunscreens causing breakouts or irritation in the past, Re'equil is where I'd start. The formulation is thoughtful, it protects without disturbing.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 50+
The global classic, and still one of the best for a reason. Neutrogena's dry-touch technology goes on slightly tacky and dries to a completely matte finish within 60 seconds, genuinely impressive for anyone who finds most sunscreens too shiny or slippery.
Widely available across pharmacies and online, works under all Indian skin tones without a cast, and layers well under makeup.
Note: contains oxybenzone, if you have sensitive or reactive skin, Re'equil or Minimalist would be a gentler choice.

How to actually apply sunscreen (most people get this wrong)
How much: A full teaspoon for your face alone. Most people use a fraction of this, and at lower amounts, your effective SPF drops significantly below what the bottle claims. Be generous.
When: Last step of your skincare routine, before makeup. Ideally 15 minutes before sun exposure.
Reapplication: Every 2 hours of active sun exposure. SPF degrades with UV, a morning application doesn't protect you at 3pm if you've been outside. Indoors all day? Once in the morning is fine.
The order: Cleanse → Toner → Serum → Moisturiser → SPF → Makeup
Quick comparison
Sunscreen | Price | Texture | White Cast | Best For |
Minimalist SPF 50 | ₹349 | Gel-cream | None | Most skin types · budget pick |
Re'equil SPF 50 | ₹545 | Fluid | None | Sensitive or reactive skin |
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer | ₹399 | Dry-touch matte | None | Anyone who hates shiny finishes |
The bottom line
Your entire skincare routine, every serum, every treatment, every carefully chosen product, is only as effective as the SPF you put on top of it. Sun damage works quietly and accumulates daily. The good news is that the sunscreen options available in India right now are genuinely excellent, lightweight, wearable, and nothing like the white chalky formulas of the past.
Pick one. Use it every morning. Your skin ten years from now will thank you.
